Trinity's Google and Microsoft environments require two-facture authentication (2FA) sometimes referred to as two-step verification (2SV) or multi-factor authentication (MFA). Other schools are going through the same changes. Though it does create an initial hurdle to use specific technology, it is a step toward preventing outsiders from hacking an individual's or the university's systems. It is also required for the university's cyber insurance.
Trinity uses Google for its mail, calendar, shared drives, etc. We use Microsoft for its Office 365, but also for a growing list of TIU services such as Courseleaf online catalog, ADP, Jenzabar J1 (comes after existing CX), and more. Once you get over the hurdle of setting up the authentication, the services will ask less for additional verification once your computer is trusted.
